While birds, animals and people are my preferred fields of endeavour, occasional visits to motor racing have their charm.  Those high-speed events challenge one’s choice of a lens, aperture and shutter speed that will combine an appropriate panning effect and a sense of drama with uncompromised detail.  For me, the faces of the drivers risking their lives are an important component of the images.  This one was taken at Dezzi’s circuit in Oslo Beach on the south coast of Natal.  Since the racing fraternity has scant respect for “golden hours”, overcast days are helpful.  Using a Nikon D500 and a handheld Nikon 70-200mm,  f2.8 lens set on 100mm,  I chose a low ISO of 50 to give me a shutter speed of a 125th on f8 with EV at -1.  As the cars came sliding around a bend in the track,  I panned the shots from a distance of about 10 meters.   Shooting on high-speed continuous increases the number of hits among a truckload of misses!

Our 1st runner-up is Dudley  Watson from Sandton Photographic Society – with ” Unbounded 2″

HOW DOES THIS COMPETITION WORK?

This is a PSSA monthly competition where clubs enter their monthly Senior winner onto Photovault. Appointed judges select the winning image.  The monthly winner gets displayed on the home page of our Web site for the duration of the month.

For the Senior Club Competition Winner of the Month, a club representative (ideally the Chairperson) submits the Senior club winner via Photovault at www.photovaultonline.com

Instructions on how to upload your entry onto Photovault can be downloaded here  doc

Frequently we do require high resolutions of these images as PSSA use them for Print Exhibitions to promote PSSA as well as showcasing the work being done around the country.

At the end of the PSSA calendar year (30 June of each year) the Senior Club Competition Winning Image of the Year is selected.
