Nicci says:-
This image of a Southern Double-Collared Sunbird was taken in June this year in the beautiful Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town. Although I live in Klerksdorp, I get the opportunity to visit Cape Town often, since all three our children live there. The aloes were in full bloom in Kirstenbosch and there was a frenzy of sunbirds visiting the aloes to get to the sweet nectar. They whizzed past my head, the males chasing one another, and I felt I had to duck to avoid a collision with them. I just stood there among the aloes, shooting 700 photos in half an hour. Pure bliss!
I used my trusty Nikon D500 with my Nikon AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens at 1/1000 sec, f/5.6, and at ISO 2000. It was late afternoon and the gardens were in the shade of Table Mountain, thus the higher ISO. I cropped the image a bit and used Topaz Denoise AI to get rid of a little noise.
Our 1st runner-up is Haig Fourie from Vanderbijlpark Fotografiese Vereniging with “Viking BW”
Our 2nd runner-up is Sussa Pelser from Sasol Highveld Photography Club with “Drops on Orange Rose”
Thank you to the judges:

HOW DOES THIS COMPETITION WORK?
This is a PSSA monthly competition where authors enter their own image onto Photovault. Appointed judges select the winning image. The monthly winner gets displayed on the home page of our website for the duration of the month.
Entries for the website competition are entered by the authors themselves via Photovault at www.photovaultonline.com.
Click here to download instructions on how to upload your entry onto Photovault.
Frequently we do require high resolutions of these images as PSSA uses them for Print Exhibitions to promote PSSA as well as showcasing the work being done around the country.
At the end of the PSSA calendar year (30 June of each year) the Website Competition Winning Image of the Year is selected.
