Personal Statement
I am a Graphic Artist, Potter and Photographer. In my Ceramics and Photography Courses and Workshops, I specialize in the development of individuals’ creativity, as well as technical aspects. Over the years, I have taken part in many exhibitions and my work has been published in numerous brochures, calendars and magazines. I am involved in photography at regional, national and international levels and have given Audio Visual and instructional presentations at various locations in South Africa, Namibia, Switzerland and France.
Work Experience
1949 to 1967 Born and educated in the Congo of Belgian nationality and French speaking. Immigrated to SOUTH AFRICA and live in STELLENBOSCH near CAPE TOWN.
1968 to 2008 Studied, qualified and worked as a Graphic Artist. Started a Pottery studio called “LE STUDIO” and specialize in teaching in stoneware, Eastern glazes and brushwork decorating methods. Had numerous Ceramic Exhibitions and received various awards for my work.
1991 to 2007 Interest in photography developed rapidly and a passion for teaching led in 1997 to the presentation of a basic photographic course called DANCE OF LIGHT, which continues to date. Was Chairman of the ‘Helderberg Photographic Society’ in Somerset West, Western Cape, for 3 years.
1998 Received the award APSSA (Associateship in Photography of South Africa) for slide work.
1999 to 2001 Received the APSSA award for Audio Visual Slide Presentations. Delivered many lectures at Stellenbosch University, various congresses and Colleges. Presented photographic seminars for corporate in all the main cities of the country. Took part in many photographic exhibitions. Received “GOLDEN APPLE” award for the promotion of photography in the Western Cape.
2001 Started the “DESERT LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKSHOPS” in the heart of the Namib Desert where we explore the vast open landscapes and the majestic dunes of Sossus Vlei in Namibia.
2002 Presented the first “MACRO PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKSHOP” where we explore a wide variety of Macro styles and techniques, one of my specialities. First “SPRING IN THE VINEYARDS WORKSHOPS” opportunities to photograph the beautiful landscapes around Stellenbosch which is the center of the Wineland of South Africa. First “DE HOOP PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKSHOP” where our participants are helped to discover the wonderful photographic opportunities of this Nature Reserve. They include large white sand dunes, the unspoiled coast with whale watching, the lake and its bird life and wild life.
2005 Photographs chosen for the 2005 and 2008 WWF calendar (World Wildlife Fund).
2007 DANCE of LIGHT has gone DIGITAL in all its Presentations ERIC PALMER has joined the DANCE of LIGHT team as INSTRUCTOR in PHOTOSHOP and WINGS PLATINUM for the making of Audio Visual shows. Invited to participate in an exhibition of Images on canvas by the Stellenbosch University Gallery. In Switzerland, invited by the LUCERNE’s Photo club to discuss my photographic techniques and philosophy. Presented my images and Audio Visuals as part of their centenary celebrations. Because of its success, this was repeated at the end of the year. Received “GOLDEN APPLE” award for the second time, for excellence in photography.
2008 After 18 years of active involvements in the HELDERBERG PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY the title of “Honorary Member” was given to me.
2009 First “FACE TO FACE WORKSHOP” we present exciting, simple, creative ways to photograph people. Selected by SANAVA as the first SA “ARTIST PHOTOGRAPHER” for a 2 months sojourn in PARIS, at “LA CITE INTERNATIONALE DES ARTS”.
2010 Sadly closed “Le Studio” after 42 years of teaching and working with ceramics. IMPROMPTU EXHIBITION / Stellenbosch University Gallery. Open AVIVA MARAIS exhibition at the “STELLENBOSCH ART GALLERY” in Stellenbosch. Open Robert Muller exhibition at “THE CAPE GALLERY” in Cape Town / Photographer. Open exhibition of “ FULL SPECTRUM PHOTO CLUB” at the “EXPOSURE GALLERY”. Woodstock / 9 photographers
2011 Trip to INDIA with 2 other Photographers
2012 Speaker at the Cape Photographers Congress in Langebaan
2013 Book on trip to India. First ‘WONDERFULLY WHACKY WORKSHOP” we concentrate on playing with our cameras, exploring techniques in unusual light situations such as High Key & Low Key, Light Painting, Projected Images, Dancing & Movement
2014 Trip to South East Asia; Thailand, Laos and Cambodia
2015 Speaker at the Cape Town Photographic Club mini congress. Presented “Macro Workshop” focusing on hands on tuition & inspiration on Art Photography
