To those of you who are still applying, take some time to look at your panel and try to see why it didn’t succeed. If you have credits make sure that your new images are equally as good, if not better. They should also fit comfortably within your panel. You may, and in fact should, change the order of your images to make sure that you present your images in the best order possible.
Balance within the panel is a very important point, this relates to factors such as subject matter, exposure and lighting. A good way of looking at your images is to look at thumbnails, all on the screen at once. You will immediately be able to see which ones look out of place – which are too dark or too light – which ones don’t complement the ones coming before or going after.
Amazing as it seems but you can also pick up processing errors by looking at the thumbnails, particularly heavy vignetting, excessive use of burning and dodging and excessive use of techniques such as highlights and shadows.
This is however just one step in the self assessment process. You should also carefully look at your images blown up to 100% on your monitor to make sure that you have done your processing correctly and don’t forget, your panel is not going to be judged on a monitor but it is going to be projected, so small problems will become big problems. Try to see your images projected before submitting them, as long as your club has a correctly calibrated projection system you will be able to get a good idea of what the judges are going to see.
A number of new rules were introduced last year but not everyone read them – while we have been lenient, be warned this is not going to continue – as a reminder they are:
1) all applicants may only submit one application at a time, regardless of the medium
(this was introduced to allow everyone an equal chance as numbers are increasing at each session and we are having to limit the number to ensure that they are all judged fairly).
2) no new digital applications may be submitted in the 1024 x 768 format.
(this format will be phased out totally at the end of January 2018 in line with modern trends. Only those applications currently in the system will be allowed to continue till that time).
As you will see there is no rule number 3 and this is because after discussion it was agreed to allow commercial print applications at this time.
A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to make sure that the process runs smoothly with Helen Wilkins and I being the hard working backroom workers in Port Elizabeth, Johann van der Walt, Jannie de Beer and Elsa Brits in Vanderbijlpark and of course the judging teams who come from all over. Our judges this time round were Martin Barber, Johan Brits, Antenie Carstens, Chris Daly, Evelyn Gibson, Johan Hosten, Hendrick Louw, Koot Marais, Francois Roux, Nico Smit, Jill Sneesby and Francois van der Watt. For the Audio Visual Judging we had four judges in Vanderbijlpark, myself, Antenie Carstens, Chris Daly & Jeff Morris with Adri van Oudheusden & Wayne Webb on standby in the Eastern Cape. We did not need to use our standby judges as the four of us in Vanderbijlpark were like minded in our judging.
