HONOURS IN AV
First of all, congratulations go to Eric Thorburn on achieving an AV-LPSSA in June 2017! Well done Eric, we are proud of you.
My gratitude goes to Izak van Niekerk for running and organising the PSSA National Audio Visual Salon 2017. Thank you also to the judges who went the extra mile to give each Audio Visual their careful consideration. A full re-run was done of each Audio Visual, and a selection was made after reaching consensus.

I would like to express my thanks to all the entrants as it is impossible to have an AV Salon without entrants. Congratulations to all who received awards. To those who did not receive awards, please do not despair. One can only learn by making audio visuals, attending audio visual workshops and looking at other audio visuals. It is the narrative that is important; and to be able to tell that story, we should use our visuals, together with music and technique in a creative way.
There were 37 Audio Visuals entered by 20 entrants. 12 audio visuals received awards – 1 x PSSA Silver Medal Award; 3 x COM awards and 8 Acceptances.

AV SALONS
Please consult the AV Salon Calendar under the Salon tab for more information on International and National Salons.
Please note that only two AVs with a maximum duration of 8 minutes may be entered in the Audia International Diaporama Festival which closes on 1 October 2017. Currently they have GPU and AAFR patronage, although some FIAP rules also apply. AVs will be judged according to FIAP Regulations – FIAP Document 2013-314 AV:
- Clarity of message perception 20 points
- Technical quality of montage 10 points
- Originality 15 points
- Quality of soundtrack 5 points
AVs that don’t accumulate a minimum of 30 points will be excluded from the contest. Participants will receive copies of the Jury charts, with notes and observations.

FIAP AV COLLECTION
The FIAP AV collection aims to give an effective picture of AV productions in each country, establish an archive and is also an incentive to stimulate authors. The FIAP observers (each in his or her own country) are currently searching for deserving Audio Visuals to be included in the FIAP library. Once submitted to the committee, a selection is made and included in the AV Collection. Please contact me should your club wish to organise a special projection session of sequences from the AV FIAP collection.
AV MEETING AT HOGSBACK CONGRESS
AV representatives of PSSA held a meeting on 30 April 2017 at the Hogsback Congress, to discuss the following matters:
1. Inclusion of third party images in AVs (eg from the Internet):
The meeting agreed that PSSA need to conform to international rules. After lengthy discussion the meeting agreed to the following: images of a documentary nature will be allowed in all PSSA AV competitions, not only in Documentary AV’s. This is applicable for all competitions bearing PSSA Patronage. PSSA encourage and prefer all AV competitions and Salons in SA to have PSSA patronage.
2. Selection of AV judges:
The meeting proposed that one PSSA AV salon per year is allowed International judges; for the other PSSA AV salons, the majority of salon judges must reside within SA.
3. Salon Medals:
It was decided that members of the AV Makers SA Club can win medals even if judges are AV Makers SA Club members. The only rule is the normal one that if you judge you can’t enter.
4. List of qualified judges:
A list of qualified judges can be obtained from the AV Chairperson.
AV SALON DIRECTORS MANUAL
A draft copy of the amended AV Salon Directors Manual to reflect the abovementioned changes was submitted to the Board on 6 August 2017 and again on 6 September 2017. A copy has also been posted on the PSSA Website http://www.pssa.co.za/av/salon-scene for members’ perusal.
SALONS
During the past year South African AV workers did extremely well on National AV Salons. Unfortunately there was less participation on International AV Salons. Thank you to all who participated and also to the organisers and their very capable and willing teams!
