PSA Youth Showcase 2024

The goal of the Photographic Society of America (PSA) Youth Showcase is to involve the Society and its Chapters, clubs, councils, and federations in the promotion and education of photography among young people by highlighting outstanding photographs from high school age students.

The Youth Showcase is open to all students worldwide, ages 14 through 18 and attending high school or its equivalent. The Showcase is an excellent opportunity for eligible students to share their work across all boundaries and receive recognition for their efforts.  The deadline for this competition was Friday, 12 April 2024.

Entries are limited to eight projected images, from any one high school. The school can enter no more than two projected images from any one student.

There are six categories. The six categories for each section are:
1. ARCH – Architecture
2. PORA – People or Animals
3. SCAP – Scapes
4. PJOU – Photojournalism
5. CCHOI – Colour Photographer’s Choice
6. MCHOI – Monochrome Photographer’s Choice

CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who participated and those who received acceptances and rewards!
For the third year in a row, the Youth Photographers won the top award – Best in Show in one of the two sections.

This year 43 students from 11 different schools from South Africa entered the competition. Two of the schools also entered in the Print Section.  

Of the 52 Digital images entered in the competition 38 received acceptances.

Of the 16 prints entered 15 received acceptances.

The scholars received the following awards in the PDI section:
1. ARCH – Architecture
1st Place – Sofia Van Der Merwe with “Silo palace” – Charlie Hofmeyr High School
2nd Place – Divan van der Merwe with “Dankbaar” – Centurion High School

2. PORA – People or Animals
1st Place – Haydn Mc Clure with “Hungry Jacana” – Ashton College Ballito
PJOU – Photojournalism
2nd Place – Haydn Mc Clure with “Vertical” – Ashton College Ballito

3. CCHOI – Color Photographer’s Choice
2nd Place – Ané Sauer with “Purple wonder” – Charlie Hofmeyr High School
Honourable Mention – Stefan Botha with “Honey” – Hermanus High School

4. MCHOI – Monochrome Photographer’s Choice
1st Place – Jeanine du Rand with “The BodyBuilder” – Zwartkop High School
3rd Place – Lizhan Ruschenbaum with “DHL stadium” – Bellville High School
Honourable Mention – Anieka Möller with “1 Thessalonians 5-11” – Piketberg High School

The scholars received the following awards in the Print section:
1. CCHOI – Color Photographer’s Choice
1st Place – Merie Langner with “Coffee Shop” – Centurion High School
2nd Place – Isabella Von Wielligh with “Counting the Days” – Centurion High School

2. MCHOI – Monochrome Photographer’s Choice
Honourable Mention – Chloe Sarikaki with “Delicate flower” – Charlie Hofmeyr High School

Out of the six category winners the Best of the Show image is selected.
Merie Langner with “Coffee Shop” from Centurion High School was awarded the Plaque for the Best of Show in Prints.
