Gerrit van Rooyen from Pretoria Photographic Society is our January winner!
Gerrit, congratulations on your winning image – Whispers of Light

Gerrit says:
Instead of photographing the lily separately, cutting it out and superimposing it on another photo for the background, I photographed it with a single image. For this purpose, I used an image of my own on a monitor for the background, with the lily some distance away but in front of the monitor. In this way, the image on the monitor will be out of focus. This allows one to separately adjust the position and the intensity of the two images independently. The lighting for the object in front of the monitor, of course, has to be shrouded from the monitor.
I have not heard or read of anyone else using this technique. It is very easy and adaptable and can be used with great success.

HOW DOES THIS COMPETITION WORK?
This is a PSSA monthly competition where clubs enter their monthly Senior winner onto Photovault. Appointed judges select the winning image. The monthly winner gets displayed on the home page of our Web site for the duration of the month.
All images must be original and must not incorporate elements produced by anyone else. By virtue of submitting an entry, the clubs must certify all the work in the entered image as their club member’s own. The PSSA Director of Competitions has the right to ask for the RAW files.
Frequently we do require high resolutions of these images as PSSA use them for Print Exhibitions to promote PSSA as well as showcasing the work being done around the country.
At the end of the PSSA calendar year (30 June of each year) the Junior Club Competition Winning Image of the Year is selected.
HOW TO UPLOAD YOUR CLUB’S WINNING IMAGE TO PHOTOVAULT
For the Junior Club Competition Winner of the Month, a club representative (ideally the Chairperson) submits the Junior club winner via Photovault at www.photovaultonline.com.
