Honours Results Jan 2022

Congratulations to our new Honours recipients, once again it is inspiring to see the quality of work that you are all producing. While it is great to see your images online, our printed Honours Image is something worth keeping and showcases all the successful applications each year.

Not everyone is of course successful in their applications, so this isn’t a happy time for all, but it is a good time to reflect, to consider, why, why didn’t my panel make it. One of the biggest problems is looking at our own images without bias. Any photograph is intensely personal and sometimes we forgot that the judges weren’t there and don’t know what we were feeling at that moment. The most successful images are those where the photographer has managed to transport the viewer into that special moment.

Something else to think about is that the images are projected on a large screen and are not viewed on a monitor, so problems such as excessive noise, over sharpening and other technical faults are magnified. The judges do not intentionally look for technical faults but, if they are the first thing that they see and they totally overpower the image then they are going to work against you.

The difference between the various levels of Honours is not just an increase in numbers, but an increase in the quality of the images and applicants should beware of applying too soon for a higher level.  As you can see from the large number of successful applicants, it is not impossible, it us something to work towards and is most satisfying when you do achieve your Honours, so keep on trying and if you haven’t done so yet, start working towards your own panel.
