Clive Rathband AV Judge

FPSSA, FRPS, EFIAP, DPAGB

Clive’s first experience with Audio Visual was around 1972 when he attended an AV Concert given by Sir George Pollock at a local college in the UK. He was fascinated by the effects that could be produced and immediately set about collecting and making equipment to produce AVs. This was, of course, in the days of colour slides, open reel tape recorders and manual dissolve units with very limited equipment being commercially available.

He became a founder member and a Committee Member of the Royal Photographic Society Audio Visual Group. He learnt a great deal about AV production via AV Workshops and as a Group Committee Member organised several Workshops bringing skilled AV producers to his local area.

Clive became an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society in Audio Visual in 1979.

In 1985 Clive was transferred by his employer to Johannesburg and he joined Germiston Camera Club. At the PSSA Congress that year he was awarded AV-APSSA.

In general photography Clive was an active entrant into Salons and achieved an APSSA in Colour Slides as well as many Salon Awards.

In 1986, to celebrate the Centenary of the City of Germiston, Germiston Camera Club organised a National Salon and Clive assisted with the production and presentation of the acceptances. A live two hour long audio visual was shown to the public, with manual dissolves and music, quite a monumental task. There was a second National Salon around 1991 and presented in the same way.

In 1987, Germiston Camera Club hosted an AV Seminar, presented by Clive and Joan Ryder and this resulted in a book being written: AV Simplified – A Practical Guide to Audio Visual Presentations. Also in 1987, Clive and Joan created a twin screen, 4-projector audio visual as a Germiston Camera Club project using members’ slides and it was presented to PSSA at Congress that year.

Clive has won many photographic awards over the years and in 1991 he was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society for a panel of Natural History slides. Also, at about the same time, he was awarded his AV-FPSSA and EFIAP.

In 2005 Clive won the Gold Medal in the Royal Photographic Society International Slide Exhibition – Nature Category.

For many years Clive has supported the Royal Photographic Society and was a member of the Natural History Distinction panel for ten years.

Clive was a late convert to digital photography but enjoys producing AVs using PTE AV Studio. This is such a creative audio visual programme and many new skills have been learnt through ZOOM membership of Wilmslow AV Group in the UK and AV Makers SA. Over the years Clive has made several AVs as an individual and jointly with Joan Ryder Rathband. Several of these sequences have achieved Awards. Together with Joan, he has judged the PECC International AV Salon and the inaugural Jurassic Coast International AV Salon as well as many local competitions.
