The time of the year %u2013 11 to 15 August %u2013 is a truly unique photographic period in the Overberg (the district around Struisbaai). Just as European photographers flock to Tuscany%u2019s lavender fields in June-July, South African photographers are drawn to the canola fields in the Overberg and Swartland in August. The rolling hills, clad in patterns of yellow and green, create breathtaking landscape compositions that are different to anything you%u2019ll see in the rest of the country. Or at any other time of the year. The best time to see lots of canola in bloom is at the beginning of August, although the flowers bloom at different times during their brief flowering season. Because the farmers plant canola crops in different fields every year the photogenic scapes differ from year to year %u2013 even week to week %u2013 and photographers do not capture the same scenes every year ad nauseam. What%u2019s more, you can photograph them any time of the day. The flowers do not need sunlight to open and you can therefore photograph canola scenes in good as well as bad weather, at the golden hours, or in the middle of the day.As a matter of fact, canola offers a magnificent foreground display for dark, brooding, stormy clouds, which you are bound to encounter at this time of the year. If you are lucky, you might even find a rainbow to include in your composition. Most of the canola scapes accompanying this article had been photographed in August during previous years.Struisbaai 11 - 15 August 2025There are many reasons why you would want to attend the 2025 PSSA National Congress in Struisbaai %u2026 but lets just look at two of them - when and where - and they go hand in hand. Why you%u2019ll want to attend the PSSA National CongressSAVE THE DATEe-Image January 2025
