Congratulations to Hannes Bronkhorst from Boksburg Camera Club
Hannes is our October winner with the image “Over voltage protection fail”
Hannes says:
I do try my hand at various genre’s of photography. I would surf Google or Youtube for inspiration or ideas and often then come across other ideas like this one.
I watched a tutorial, then built a wooden box on which to mount a fitting for the globe and for a dimmer switch. I painted the box and light fitting black as I wanted a dark theme.
The light setup is fairly easy. Backlit with a black flag between the globe and light source. I used a Godox AD200pro on close to minimum power as this is easy to freeze action and one can shoot in continuous mode. As per good advice, break the globes in plastic with a hammer. Some break in a way that makes them unusable. Other, like this one, broke nicely. Work with gloves as the glass is sharp.
After this it was trial and error. One hand with camera remote and press the shutter as one then start to turn on the dimmer switch. There was a number of good photos but this one, for me, was the best. I don’t do Photoshop too well so most of my work is a single shot and not composites. I did do some editing in Photoshop, like increasing clarity, decreasing highlights etc.
Our 1st runner-up is Craig Morgan from West Rand Photographic Club with “Bursts of Iridescence”
Our 2nd runner-up is Charles Naude from Hermanus Photographic Society with “Late Night Thirst”
Thank you to the judges:
Francois Venter – National Photographic Club
Charmaine Joubert – Port Elizabeth Camera Club
Alta Oosthuizen – Pretoria Photographic Society

HOW DOES THIS COMPETITION WORK?
Members of PSSA only are invited to personally enter any one image per month into this competition, and submit it via Photovault at www.photovaultonline.com. If you are not a member of PSSA, you can unfortunately not enter this competition.
If your image has won the Senior or Junior club competition at your club during the month, it will be entered in either of those two competitions for the month. PLEASE do not enter it into the Web site competition as well for obvious reasons. Remember, it is the same judges that judge all three competitions for a particular month and having the same image in two competitions, Senior or Junior and the Web site competition will disadvantage the image. If your image does not win in the Senior or Junior Club Competition and you would like to enter it into the Web site competition, you can do so as long as it is a month or so later.
The winning image will be displayed on the home page of our Website for the duration of the month.
Instructions on how to upload your entry onto Photovault can be downloaded here
Frequently we do require high resolutions of these images as PSSA use them for Print Exhibitions to promote PSSA as well as showcasing the work being done around the country.
At the end of the PSSA calendar year (30 June of each year) the Website Competition Winning Image of the Year is selected.
