Charmaine Joubert from Port Elizabeth Camera Club is our April winner!
Charmaine, congratulations on your winning image – Telling the kids off
Charmaine says:
We were told about a hyena den that was a few minutes’ drive from the Balule Satelite Camp, Kruger. Every morning and evening we would sit at the den and wait for the hyenas to appear but no luck.
On our final morning at Balule, we visited the den once again and there they were. The pups were very active and playful when we arrived but it was still pretty dark. We decided to wait for the morning light and as the sun popped out, I managed to get a few photos of the pups interacting with one of the adults, before they all wandered off further into the dense bush.
The background in this image is the tar road which gave a nice dark contrast to the beautifully lit hyenas. Editing was done in Photoshop. I cropped the image, added contrast and detail to the hyenas. I also used noise reduction in certain areas in the image.
The image was taken with a Canon 7DmkII and a Canon f5.6 lens.
Aperture f5.6, 1/500s shutter speed, ISO800
Our 1st runner-up is Johan Drotsky from Bethal Fotografieklub with “Dollar copy”
Our 2nd runner-up is Jacques Kruger from Ermelo Fotoklub with “Blue Emperor Dragonfly”

HOW DOES THIS COMPETITION WORK?
Members of PSSA only are invited to personally enter any one image per month into this competition, and submit it via Photovault at www.photovaultonline.com. If you are not a member of PSSA, you can unfortunately not enter this competition.
If your image has won the Senior or Junior club competition at your club during the month, it will be entered in either of those two competitions for the month. PLEASE do not enter it into the Web site competition as well for obvious reasons. Remember, it is the same judges that judge all three competitions for a particular month and having the same image in two competitions, Senior or Junior and the Web site competition will disadvantage the image. If your image does not win in the Senior or Junior Club Competition and you would like to enter it into the Web site competition, you can do so as long as it is a month or so later.
The winning image will be displayed on the home page of our Website for the duration of the month.
Instructions on how to upload your entry onto Photovault can be downloaded here
Frequently we do require high resolutions of these images as PSSA use them for Print Exhibitions to promote PSSA as well as showcasing the work being done around the country.
At the end of the PSSA calendar year (30 June of each year) the Website Competition Winning Image of the Year is selected.
