I shot it at the Strand Tidal Pool outside Cape Town ( near Gordons Bay ) on my Hasselblad H4D-40 camera with a 80mm lens ( in 35mm terms – 63mm ).
Exposure was 256 seconds ( 4.5 mins ) @ f27 ISO 100 – shot through a Lee Big Stopper 10 stop ND filter with a Lee Grad ND 9 hard filter for the sky.
Shot just before sunset, camera on heavy duty Manfrotto Carbon Fibre tripod.
The long exposure allows everything that is moving to blur I.e. clouds and water which offsets the concrete and rock as they arn’t moving.
I love shooting ultralong exposures, problem is you don’t get many chances to shoot various pics as the exposure takes 9 mins to complete as the digital back builds up the 2nd 4.5 minute exposure to build up the black in the shot.
I often shoot shorter exposures on a second camera close by so I don’t waste any opportunities.
I went back 4 times to get the shot, 2 hour roundtrip from my home per attempt.
Didn’t do much in post apart from remove 2 little rocks poking out of the sea which messed up the composition, burnt in a bit of detail in the rock so it wasn’t a silhouette, cropped a little off the side and also desaturated the pic a little in PS ( to take out a bit of colour )”
Our 1st runner-up is Jack Weinberg from Camera Club of Johannesburg – with ” Stone Chat Landing”
Our 2nd runner-up is Gaby Grohovaz from West Rand Photographic Club with “Holding on to Time”
Thank you to the judges:
Jill Sneesby – Port Elizabeth Camera Club
Nicol du Toit – Cape Town Photographic Society
Corine Ross – Krugersdorp Kameraklub

HOW DOES THIS COMPETITION WORK?
This is a PSSA monthly competition where clubs enter their monthly Senior winner onto Photovault. Appointed judges select the winning image. The monthly winner gets displayed on the home page of our Web site for the duration of the month.
For the Senior Club Competition Winner of the Month, a club representative (ideally the Chairperson) submits the Senior club winner via Photovault at www.photovaultonline.com.
Instructions on how to upload your entry onto Photovault can be downloaded here
Frequently we do require high resolutions of these images as PSSA use them for Print Exhibitions to promote PSSA as well as showcasing the work being done around the country.
At the end of the PSSA calendar year (30 June of each year) the Senior Club Competition Winning Image of the Year is selected.
