Craig Morgan from Randburg Foto Klub is our July winner!
Craig, congratulations on your winning image – Whirring Wings
Craig says:-
When in Ecuador one is constantly surrounded by beautiful birds, especially an abundance of hummingbirds. For photographing these hummingbirds, I would watch their movements and favourite locations in the garden. I would then station my camera on a sturdy tripod, and take some test shots, focusing on having a clean background.
Once I had settled on a good location that was not in direct sunlight, I set my camera in M and tried various combinations of ISO, aperture and shutter speed. To get the blur on the wings I needed to keep the shutter speed as low as possible without blurring the rest of the hummingbird. I also had to be careful to not blow-out the highlights, and many of the hummingbirds have white feathered parts on their bodies. I took hundreds of images, and only a handful turned out as desired. Nevertheless, I absolutely enjoyed every moment just being out there in nature. For this image of an Andean Emerald my settings were F9.0, ISO-800 and 1/400s at 600mm.
Our 1st runner-up is – Koos Fourie from Vanderbijlpark Fotografiese Vereniging with “sossusvlei dune”

HOW DOES THIS COMPETITION WORK?
This is a PSSA monthly competition where clubs enter their monthly Senior winner onto Photovault. Appointed judges select the winning image. The monthly winner gets displayed on the home page of our Web site for the duration of the month.
For the Senior Club Competition Winner of the Month, a club representative (ideally the Chairperson) submits the Senior club winner via Photovault at www.photovaultonline.com.

Frequently we do require high resolutions of these images as PSSA use them for Print Exhibitions to promote PSSA as well as showcasing the work being done around the country.
At the end of the PSSA calendar year (30 June of each year) the Senior Club Competition Winning Image of the Year is selected.
