March Club Winning Picture Senior

Johan Greyling from AFO Photography Club wins with “Black & White”

This image was taken on the 13th September 2015 on the Saturday morning at 07h23. It must be a lucky 13 for me!

I was in the Masia Mara waiting at a crossing point for the Zebras and Wildebeest to cross the river. They came in their thousands creating a lot of dust for the perfect natural backdrop. The banks of the river created a lot of shady spots but there was also this perfect area of sunlight that filtered through the dust.  The dust together with the shadows and highlights created a dramatic atmosphere for this photo but technically it was extremely difficult to control the exposure settings and focus.

The dust forms a filter that highly increases the highlights (whites) and also causes proper focus on the animals. I have taken this shot at -1EV to protect my whites.  This image was shot with a Nikon D810 with my beloved Tamron 150-600mm at 600mm handheld at F7,1, ISO 1600, 1/2500s and -1EV.

Post processing done in Lightroom CC.
