He is our March winner with “Woodland catch”
The image was taken in the Loskop Nature Reserve in Mpumalanga. The Woodland Kingfishers normally breed from December to February in the summer months here in South Africa. I managed to take this picture while the birds were feeding their chicks.The parents are very committed with the feeding to ensure the chicks grow fast. The Woodland Kingfishers will feed their chicks about 3 to 4 times per hour depending on the size of the prey. They catch a variety of insects from spiders, worms, grasshoppers, praying mantis, bees etc. If the chicks get bigger they will also catch small frogs, small fish and mice. It took a lot of patience to take this picture but my patience paid off…

HOW DOES THIS COMPETITION WORK?
This is a PSSA monthly competition where clubs enter their monthly Junior winner onto Photovault. Appointed judges select the winning image. The monthly winner gets displayed on the home page of our Website for the duration of the month.
For the Junior Club Competition Winner of the Month a club representative (ideally the Chairperson) submits the club winner via Photovault at www.photovaultonline.com.

At the end of the PSSA calendar year (30 June of each year) the Junior Club Competition Winning Image of the Year is selected.
