Junior Club Competition Winners June 2021

Bloemfontein Kameraklub Jack Gamble Heiveld Arch

Jack Gamble from Bloemfontein Kameraklub is our June winner!

Jack, congratulations on your winning image – Heiveld Arch

Jack says:

Having hiked the Cederberg mountains and seen hundreds of outstanding photographs of the Wolfberh Arch, I was inspired to take a photograph of my own of a lesser known arch, also in the Cederberg range, north of Ceres in the Koue Bokkeveld on the farm Houdenbek. The rock formation we hiked to is known as Heiveld Arch.

The decision to hike to the arch was based on the phase of the moon and the perfectly clear atmospheric conditions after some good rains had fallen in the greater Western Cape. Three of us set of on foot on 20 September 2020 at about 14:30, after making advance arrangements and obtaining permission from the farm owner to hike to the arch. The hike is a steep hike which took us roughly 3 hours.

The image I envisaged was one of the Milky Way reflected in a small rock pool in the foreground, with the arch as the focal point and the Milky Way in the background and in the hige hole beneath the arch.

Upon our arrival, there was very little water in the pool so some improvisation was needed. Some strong compositions were found and a series of lovely photos were captured until late into the dark night, after which we retired to bed.

The star trail photo resulted from my inability to sleep. Lying on my back staring starry eyed at the magnificent sky in this remote and pristine location, the situation begged for one more photo. I took only one which lasted 35 minutes with long exposure NR turned on. I was thrilled with the resulting RAW file in my camera’s image review the next morning. I woke up to a crisp, beautiful spring morning on top of a remote mountain in pristine wilderness, fantastic nature all around.

Our 1st runner-up is Mari Botes from Hermanus Photographic Society with “Dusty Kgalagadi Sunrise”

HOW DOES THIS COMPETITION WORK?

This is a PSSA monthly competition where clubs enter their monthly Junior winner onto Photovault. Appointed judges select the winning image.  The monthly winner gets displayed on the home page of our Website for the duration of the month.

For the Junior Club Competition Winner of the Month, a club representative (ideally the Chairperson) submits the club winner via Photovault at www.photovaultonline.com

Instructions on how to upload your entry onto Photovault can be downloaded here  doc

Frequently we do require high resolutions of these images as PSSA use them for Print Exhibitions to promote PSSA as well as showcasing the work being done around the country.

At the end of the PSSA calendar year (30 June of each year) the Junior Club Competition Winning Image of the Year is selected.
